Starting in the tropical city of Cairns nestled close by to the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef we venture first into a spectacular landscape dominated by pristine rainforests, before continuing on over the contrasting tablelands to visit the largest lava tube system in the world and the ancient sandstone Cobbold Gorge.
Further on we push into the 186,000 square kilometre expanse of the Gulf Savannah, Queensland's Outback by the sea, home to Australia’s prawn capital of Karumba and some stunning coastal settlements located on the shores of the sparkling turquoise waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria. We then spend two nights roaming around the stunning Boodjamulla National Park (previously know as Lawn Hill National Park), exploring the emerald waters and amazing scenery on offer in this real life outback oasis.
The first week draws to a close as we enter the unbelievably remote and strikingly beautiful Northern Territory.
Ride the road less travelled
Week one rounds out with us entering the remote Northern Territory
Dirt tracks are the theme for week two and there will be plenty of gravel and off-road riding to enjoy before we reach the tiny settlement of Roper Bar on the banks of the crocodile inhabited Roper River. We spend a night at Katherine allowing us to enjoy a sunset cruise on the mighty Nitmiluk Gorge (included in the tour price). It's a series of 13 gorges banked by sheer 70 metre high cliffs, sunset is utterly spectacular and undoubtedly one of the highlights of the second week.
We continue on to the rightfully legendary UNESCO World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park where we spend two nights; this means we have plenty of time to ride through this massive park, view the spectacular wildlife, visit the ancient indigenous rock art and get a real impression of what a tropical delight Kakadu really is. An overnight stop in the Northern Territory capital of Darwin will give us taste of life in a northern city, before we leave the familiarity of the urban hub behind and hit the Outback once more.
The second week is seen out as we indulge in some wild camping on the extremely remote dirt tracks between Daly Waters & Timber Creek.
Ride through the UNESCO World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park
We now enter Australia’s biggest state - Western Australia, venturing forth to ride a vast and empty, yet incredibly beautiful landscape of ancient red sandstone, turquoise waters and epic cattle stations the size of some European countries. We reach the mighty Kimberly and hit what is fast becoming Australia’s most iconic 'must do' ride the Gibb River Road. We stay two nights at the stunning Home Valley Station where we can explore the surroundings in more details, resplendent with permanent waterfalls and rocky escarpments. Continuing along the Gibb River road we reach Derby situated on King George Sound on the Indian Ocean, then push on to finally reach Broome and a triumphant final few kilometres along the beach after 3 weeks of some of the most extraordinary riding through an amazing diversity of landscapes.
Chances to ride the incredible Gibb River Road are hard to come by at the best of times, seize this one while you can!
