Nothern Thailand Journey

Northern Thailand Journey

A focus of this tour will be the local Thai cuisine and we hope to give you a better understanding of the styles, flavors and techniques of this delicious and fascinating cuisine.
In every region that we visit we will sample and learn about the different regional flavors and favorites.

The roads that we will be riding are mostly easy to ride but there are some steep and technically demanding stretches. You must be able to handle a motorcycle and do not expect to learn how to ride while on this tour.

The ride starts in Chiang Mai, the largest city in Northern Thailand, some 700 km north of Bangkok. Chiang Mai has great hotels and facilities. Included in this luxurious tour are all flights and transfers from your arrival in Bangkok.

Also we visit the Grand Palace where you will find the most important temple in the whole country: Wat Phra Keow - home of the Emerald Buddha. After lunch by the River at Supatra Riverhouse you will board a longtail- boat to discover another and quiet unexpected side of Bangkok.

In Thonburi, on the westbank of the Chaophraya, you will get the impression that you have entered another world. ""Is this still Bangkok?"" you may find yourself asking, as you are driving by wooden houses on stilts in an almost serene atmosphere. Afterwards the boat will bring you directly to your river hotel. In the evening experience your dinner with the lights of the city, by cruising the Chao Phraya River aboard a beautifully restored rice barge. Day 3:
In the morning we start our tour from Chiang Mai in eastern direction. An easy first day of riding, ideal to get familiar with your motorbike. We cruise hilly roads and reach Phayao where we stop by the lake for lunch. In the afternoon we will arrive in Nan, the capital of the Nan province.

For centuries it was a separate, autonomous Kingdom with few relationships to the outside world. Now, the city is a beautiful town with many well-preserved temples. Dinner will be at a local restaurant by the Nan River. We will overnight in Nan.

Day 4:
In the early morning we visit the most beautiful temple in town, the Wat Phumin. The temple was built as if it were on the back of two immense snakes. Then we leave Nan and follow the main Road 101 for a while before we turn left and ride for an hour on a perfect motorbike road with nice sweeping corners to Phu Langka. Here we take a break from a nice view point and have a simple local lunch. Afterwards we make our way through the hinterland on small back roads in northern direction. We pass through rice fields and fruit plantations and cruise through farm villages. Before we reach our hotel we visit the impressive Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) which is today recognized as one of the main attractions all over Thailand. Dinner will be at a local restaurant. We Overnight in Chiang Rai.

Day 5:
In the morning we leave the city of Chiang Rai and continue towards the mountains of Phu Chi Fa, were we will have local lunch. Phu Chi Fa is located on the border between Thailand and Laos. It’s a great ride up here and the scenery is spectacular with lots of photo opportunities. Most roads are local with not much traffic. We will take our time and enjoy the ride. Since Phu Chi Fa is fairly remote, there are not many tourists who make it to this part of Thailand. If time permits and the weather is clear, we will ride up to the lookout and walk to the cliff on the border to Laos, enjoy the valley before you. We proceed to the legendary Golden Triangle where the three borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Before dinner we can visit the local Opium Musem. Overnight in the Golden Triangle.

Day 6:
In the morning we continue our ride along rice paddies and farm villages. We visit the most Northern town of Thailand in Mae Sai and explore the impressive Choui Fong Tea House. The teahouse serves all kinds of different tea blends and great cakes and the scenery is lovely. Continuing on to Doi Mae Salong on yet more amazing twisty mountainous roads. Doi Mae Salong is a Chinese settlement, which was built, by a division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949. Today the village still offers a native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers and countless tea plantations as far as the eyes can see.

We then descend from Doi Mae Salong to Thaton, a small town on the banks of the Kok River, bordering with Myanmar. We ride up hill from Thaton and enjoy the splendid view from Wat Thaton over the town, Following the main road Nr. 107 for a while before we turn right up onto a steep zigzagging asphalt road to Doi Angkhang. Angkhang Royal Agricultural Station is a research project for planting fruit trees, vegetables and other crop under the patronage of the King. We stay overnight in our hotel in Doi Angkhang.

Day 7:
Another great motorcycle day is ahead of us. Once again we follow a road near the border of Myanmar. We ride road 1340 before we meet we meet Road 107 again. Soon we turn right on 1095 and cross the mountains from Maetaeng to Pai. This is the beginning of the road to Mae Hong Son, famous for having 1864 bends of varying sharpness. We stay overnight in Pai. Dinner will be in a wonderful local restaurant by the river.

Day 8:
In the morning we pass two mountains with nice scenic view points en route to Mae Hong Son. We take a little detour and drive up to Ban Rak Thai, a Chinese settlement for a delicious typical Chinese lunch. We then drive to the pier at Pai River and park the motorcycles here. From here we enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Pai River for about 25 min to a Kayen Long Neck village.

The Kayen, a tribal minority, historically lived in the hills on the Myanmar side of the border. Some of their women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. Many ideas regarding why the coils are worn have been suggested. Some have hypothesized that the rings protected women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Another theory is that the coils originate from the desire to look more attractive. We return by boat and ride to the nearby Fern Resort - a basic but lovely Eco resort in the middle of rice paddies. We stay overnight in Mae Hong Son and have a BBQ Dinner over a campfire.

Day 9:
On this last riding day we continue from Mae Hong Son to Khun Yuam on another sensational windy road. In Khun Yuam we visit the local War Museum. The Imperial Japanese Army troops were stationed here during the construction of a highway, which should cross to Burma and India. We continue on a rural road to Mae Chaem for a local lunch. If time and weather permits we will ride up to Doi Inthanon, witch at 2,565 m is the highest mountain in Thailand. Our last stop will be at the Vachiratharn Waterfall - an impressive and powerful 80 m high waterfall. We reach Chiang Mai in the afternoon, in time to get ready for our farewell Chaing Mai dinner. We end the day together with our new friends, sharing good riding memories and looking at some of the pictures from our adventures of the last days. We will overnight in Chiang Mai.

Day 10:
An easy morning in Chiang Mai before we transfer to the airport for the flight to Bangkok. Transfer to the hotel and check in early in the afternoon because you now have time for some leisure! In the evening, we enjoy a farewell dinner at the terrace of the hotel by the river. Overnight in Bangkok.

Departure day:
