Chile, Bolivia & Peru: A truly exhilarating motorcycle road trip from the Pacific to the Andes

This ride, starting on the Pacific coastline, takes in the wonderful desert landscapes of the Atacama Desert visiting adobe villages such as the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama. The ride shall visit Bolivia the highest and most isolated country in Latin America. Bolivia is a kaleidoscope of landscapes and experiences as we visit the absolutely stunning Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flats along with the epic vistas as we cross the Andes.

We visit the world’s highest city of Potosi before descending!! to La Paz, Bolivia’s unofficial capital. We then cross into Peru a land of world-renowned antiquities and awesome landscapes. We shall visit the world’s highest navigable lake Titicaca before arriving at the Incan heartland of Cusco, a fabled city built upon Incan ruins and the stepping off point for the stunning sacred valley and the 7th wonder of the world Machu Picchu amongst other Incan ruins. Join us on this experience packed 16-day motorbike adventure across the rooftop of South America.

This ride also runs in reverse: Machu Picchu to Atacama from the Andes to the Pacific

SANTIAGO TO CUSCO (March departure)
 

Joining Day: Your Santiago airport transfer will take you directly to our joining hotel, ready for an early start tomorrow. Today you will meet your crew for your tour briefing and welcome dinner.
 

Day 1: A morning flight takes us to northern Chile and the seaside resort town of Iquique.
 

Day 2: A fantastic first ride day as we travel into the Atacama Desert. Tonight's destination is San Pedro de Atacama.
 

Day 3: A free day to explore San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 4: Today we will ride through stunning desert and mountain landscapes. Our overnight stay is remote Ollague.
 

Day 5: Today will see us ride the open, rugged spaces bordering the edge of the Salar de Uyuni. Enjoy the best pizza in Bolivia at the Tonito Hotel, Uyuni.
 

Day 6: We take a 4 x 4 across the Salar de Uyuni to Fish Island where we view the giant cacti and enjoy a picnic lunch.

 

Day 7: As we ride towards Potosi, you'll think you've been transported to the Wild West, as depicted in an old western movie.
 

Day 8: The day is yours to explore Potosi.

Day 9: Today we'll ride through the mountains of the Cordilleras de Azanaques and de los Frailes, the roads reach heights of 5,200 m / 17,160 ft. Our destination is La Paz.
 

Day 10: Enjoy an included city tour of La Paz or take the challenge of the optional "Death Road" Tour

Day 11: Crossing into Peru, we will ride the shores of Lake Titikaka, with great views of the snow capped Andes in the distance. We will overnight in Puno.
 

Day 12: The morning’s activities consist of an included half-day boat excursion to the amazing Uros, the floating reed islands of Lake Titicaca. The afternoon is free to explore Puno.
 

Day 13: Today’s ride is spectacular with the towering snow capped peaks of the Andes all around. Cusco, the Incan capital is tonight's destination.
 

Day 14: A free day in Cusco to explore this amazing city built on Incan ruins.

Day 15: We ride the incredible Sacred Valley with its enormous Incan ruins, before parking the bikes in Ollantaytambo and catching an afternoon train to Aguas Calientes, which is the base for the legendary Machu Picchu.

Day 1: A free day in Cusco to explore this amazing city built on Incan ruins.
 

Day 2: We ride the incredible Sacred Valley with its enormous Incan ruins, before parking the bikes in Ollantaytambo and catching an afternoon train to Aguas Calientes, which is the base for the legendary Machu Picchu.
 

Day 3: Today we catch the early bus (20 minute ride) to the Incan fortress of Machu Picchu and have a guided tour of this world heritage site. We ride back to Cusco in the afternoon.

Day 4: Today’s ride is spectacular with the towering snow capped peaks of the Andes all around. Puno is our overnight destination.

85% of this ride is on pavement, some sections of pavement can be potholed and narrow. There will be amazing mountainous rides. 

15% of this ride is on dirt. There are days that are spent on hard packed dirt, sections of which have loose gravel and can be rutted. Some sections of sand may also be encountered. 

 

It is important to note that this environment is ever changing and as such so are the ride conditions.

On this ride we will cross a 5,000 m / 16,400 ft pass and some time will be spent at an altitude over 3,000 m / 9,800 ft. 

 

This ride is generally suitable for off-road novice and two-up riding excepting 2 days on the Bolivian Altiplano where some more difficult riding conditions may be encountered.

Climate

In Santiago and Iquique the weather is likely to be sunny and mild, as we enjoy the low altitude of these cities. In Bolivia and Peru we ride the Altiplano (high plains) and the Andes Mountains where we will experience cool weather, with mostly clear sunny days. It’s not the rainy season so we should not expect rain, however it is the mountains so keep in mind that rain is always possible and there can be very cool temperatures.

Lows: Early morning on the Altiplano can get close to freezing: 0 Celsius / 32 Fahrenheit

  • Our accommodations range from small family run hotels through to 4 star hotels. 

  • A flexible attitude is needed as standards are not always what we are accustomed to. 

  • All accommodation is on a twin share basis. If you are traveling alone we will pair you up with another solo traveler. However, if you prefer single accommodation a single supplement is available: US$ 800.00 (please note that you may be required to share a bathroom at least once on this trip)

  • You will need to be in Santiago or Cusco, depending on direction of travel, one day prior to start of expedition, for your joining day (a bonus nights accommodation is included) 

  • All riders must have a valid motorcycle license and at least two years riding experience. 

  • It is a requirement that all clients have appropriate insurance for this type of expedition.
